With six kids between 3 and 14, I've bought a lot of Christmas gifts. Some of them were played with for years. Some were forgotten by New Year's.
When my kids were little, I shopped at Dollar General and budget stores and bought lots of off-brand toys, because more presents felt like more Christmas. Now I do the opposite. I spend about $50 to $100 per kid, every kid gets the same number of gifts, usually four or five, and I buy fewer things that are better made. I wrote about the whole budget in Christmas on a budget with six kids.
So here are the Christmas gifts for kids that have actually worked in our house, sorted by age, plus the two big ones everybody shares. At the end of each age, I added a few more popular ideas that we don't own, for anyone who wants more options.
Christmas gifts for toddlers (age 3)
A Barbie with accessories. My 3-year-old loves this Barbie gymnast set. It comes with so many fun pieces that she can play a different game with it every day. Little kids don't need a big toy. They need a toy with options.
A doll house and doll clothes. My 3- and 6-year-old both play make-believe with their dolls for hours, and this doll house is where most of it happens. A pack of doll clothes is an easy add-on, and it keeps the dolls they already own feeling new.
More ideas for this age: DUPLO bricks, magnetic building tiles, a play kitchen, or a push or ride-on toy they can scoot around the house.
Christmas gifts for 6-year-olds
A smart robot toy. My 6-year-old got this smart robot toy, and it's a great in-between gift for a kid who's too big for baby toys and not ready for video games.
A toy workbench. My older boys build houses and forts out of scrap wood in the backyard, and the little ones want to do exactly what they do. This pretend workbench lets them build right alongside their brothers, with no real saw involved.
A scooter. Every one of my kids 6 and up has this scooter. It gets them outside and burning off energy, which, in December, is a gift for mom too.
More ideas for this age: Kinetic Sand, a bead or bracelet-making kit, a dress-up bin, or a Play-Doh set with tools and molds.
Christmas gifts for 8-year-olds
A Barbie career doll. My 8-year-old loves the Barbie career dolls. This doctor Barbie is her favorite, because a doctor is what she wants to be when she grows up. I love a toy that lets a kid practice the dream.
A kids' microscope. My 8-year-old has this kids' microscope, and it turns the backyard into a science lab. Leaves, bugs, a strand of hair, the cat's fur. Everything goes under the lens. It's a good match for a future doctor.
More ideas for this age: a LEGO set, Snap Circuits Jr., a remote-control car, or a friendship bracelet kit.
Christmas gifts for 10- to 12-year-olds
Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales. Four of my kids are huge readers, and this Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales 3-book box set is a win for both my 10- and 12-year-old sons. They've gotten this set and its sequels, and they love them. They're graphic novels about real history, so they read like comics and they sneak in some learning.
A human body encyclopedia set. My 12-year-old has this human body encyclopedia box set. For a curious kid, it's the kind of book they pick up on their own.
A Kindle Kids. My 10-year-old has this exact Kindle Kids. For a kid who goes through books fast, it saves a lot of trips to the library, and it's a screen that's only for reading.
Gaming headphones. These gaming headphones have great sound and that serious "gamer" look, so my kids feel like they're taking their gaming seriously, without me spending a lot of money. They also make a house of eight a lot quieter.
More ideas for this age: Raina Telgemeier's graphic novels, like Smile, a karaoke microphone, an embroidery or sewing kit, or a sketchbook with a good set of gel pens.
Christmas gifts for teens (age 14)
Real art supplies. My 14-year-old is an artist. She does digital art and sketches, and she takes her work very seriously. So this year I decided to upgrade her tools with this Castle Art Supplies 100-piece drawing and charcoal set. Teens are hard to buy for, but giving them better tools for the thing they already love tells them you take it seriously too.
More ideas for this age: an Instax Mini instant camera, a Bluetooth speaker, LED strip lights for their room, or gear for the sport they already play.
The big gifts we share
Two gifts in our house are too expensive to buy for one kid, so they belong to everyone.
Nintendo Switch. What I like about the Nintendo Switch is that it works two ways. A kid can play on the handheld screen, or we put it on the TV so the whole family can watch and play together. With six kids, a game everyone can join is worth a lot.
Meta Quest. The Meta Quest isn't cheap, so all my older kids share it. The little ones don't use it. If you're thinking about one, check Meta's age guidance first and plan on it being a family gift rather than one kid's.
Screens are looser over Christmas break in our house, but we still have one rule: if anyone gets frustrated at a game, they take a break and go outside. You can see how we handle the rest in our winter break routine, and I keep a list of screen-free activities for the days everyone needs one.
How I shop for six kids
Start in October. I start shopping in October and finish on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Spreading it out keeps December from wrecking the budget.
Same number for everyone. Every kid gets the same number of gifts, usually four or five. It heads off the "why did she get more" conversation on Christmas morning.
Fewer, better toys. One toy they'll play with all year beats five they'll forget.
Share the big ones. A gaming system or a headset becomes a family gift, not a line item on one kid's budget.
Don't forget the grown-ups. If you're shopping for the rest of the family too, here are my practical gifts for dad and stocking stuffers for moms under $15.
The best Christmas gifts for kids aren't the biggest ones. They're the ones that fit the kid: a doctor doll for the one who wants to be a doctor, books for the reader, real art supplies for the artist. Start with what your kid already loves, and the gift is easy.
